12-3 run to take a 36-16 lead after 1. And it got worse in the 2nd
quarter as the Cavs scored 16 straight points, capped by consecutive
3-pointers by Kevin Love, to take a 68-28 lead with 2 minutes left.
Cleveland led a ridicuolous 72-38 at the half. The entire 2nd half was
pure garbage time and the only question was how large the final margin

and it was all tied up at 73-73 after 3. The game remained close in the
4th quarter with neither team able to pull away. San Antonio led 92-91

Memphis a 51-33 lead with 5:15 to go. Memphis led 56-41 after 3. Dallas
never challenged in the 4th quarter and pushed their lead into the 20s
midway through the quarter and it just became a question of if Dallas
would break 60 points (finally did so with 1:18 left). [Though the point

not records.] Memphis shot 40.3% (31-77) FG and Dallas shot just 28.8%

Boston led 29-17 after 1 as Dallas shot just 7-24 FG. Avery Bradley (Bos)

Mavs within 48-50 with 3 minutes remaining. Boston led 57-54 after 3.
The game stayed close in the 4th quarter with both teams holding small
leads. J.J. Barea left the game with 7:30 left with what was later called
a strained calf (and huge releif that it wasn't a season ending injury).

Olynyk had 10 points.
- 11/16 J.J. Barea left the Boston game during the 4th quarter with
what was later diagnosed as a strained calf and did not return. Thankfully
it is not believed to be a season ending injury (initial fear was it was a
torn Achilles as the way the injury occurred was how a torn Achilles
looks), but he will like miss a number of games. With Barea, Williams,
and Devin Harris (hopefully to return to action soon) injured, look for
the Mavs to pick up anothr point guard (meaning a player on the roster
will have to be released).
- 11/16 Deron Williams left the Boston game during the 2nd quarter
with a strained left calf and did not return.

run. New York led 67-51 after 3 as the Knicks out-scored Dallas 31-12 in

and pushed their lead into the 20s early in the 2nd quarter and then into
the 30s late in the quarter and led 67-36 at the half. But the Mavs
actually came out of halftime focused while Golden State was acting like
the game was already over and Dallas opened the quarter with a 20-6 run to
pull within 56-73 with 4:50 to go. Consecutive layups by Dwight Powel
pulled Dallas within 65-78 with 2 minutes left. Golden State led 84-68
after 3. Dallas out-scored Golden State 32-17 in the 3rd quarter. Dallas

the last 14 points of the quarter to take a 47-39 lead at the half as
Milwaukee didn't scored over the last 5 minutes. Milwaukee scored 7
straight points to pull within 54-55 with 3:15 remaining, but Dallas was

- 10/30 Houston defeated Dallas 93-92 in Houston. Dirk Nowitzki was
a late scratch right before tipoff as he still had a stomach ailment.
Corey Brewer hit a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer to give Houston a 34-25
lead after 1. A 3-pointer by Trevor Ariza gave the Rockets their largest
lead at 55-40 with 4:35 to go and Houston led 63-53 at the half. Dallas
opened the 3rd quarter with an 11-2 run to pull within 64-65 with 6:50
remaining. Houston closed the quarter with an 11-2 run to take an 80-70
lead after 3. A 3-pointer by James Harden gave Houston an 89-80 lead with
4 minutes left, but Dallas scored the next 7 points and the game stayed
close the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Wesley Matthews from 5 feet
beyond the arc at the shot clock was running out tied the game at 92-92
with 4 seconds to go. After a timeout, Harden was fouled driving and
there was only .1 second left on the clock. He missed the 1st free throw,
but did hit the 2nd for the game winner. Dallas' lob-inbounds pass was
caught by Houston and that was game. Matthews had 26 points including
9-25 FG and 3-15 3-pointers and 5 rebounds, Harrison Barnes had 10 points
including 3-11 FG and 5 rbounds, Deron Williams had 12 points including
4-11 FG, and J.J. Barea had 18 points and 5 assists. For Houston, Harden
had 28 points on 8-23 FG and 9-12 FT, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 8
turnovers; Ryan Anderson had 14 points and 12 rebounds; and Eric Gordon
had 14 points including 5-15 FG.
- 10/30 Dirk Nowitzki (ill) did not play in the Houston game.
- 10/30 Dallas activated Dirk Nowitzki and placed A.J. Hammons (no
injury) on IL.
- 10/28 Houston defeated Dallas 106-98 in Dallas. Both teams had
small runs during the 1st quarter and the game was tied after 1. James
Harden (Hou) was held scoreless in the 1st quarter as Wesley Matthews
played excellent defense. Houston started setting picks late in the 2nd
quarter to the rest of the game to get Matthews off Harden and Harden got
going. The game stayed close and Houston held a 52-50 lead at the half.
Houston scored the last 7 points of the 3rd quarter (including 2
3-pointers by Harden) to take a 77-67 lead after 3. Houston scored 6
straight points to take their largest lead at 93-78 with 4:30 left and
Dallas wasn't able to get their offense going again to recover. Harrison
Barnes had 31 points including 13-23 FG and 5 rebounds, Matthews had 13
points on 4-14 FG and 1-8 3-pointers, and Deron Williams had 14 points.
For Houston, Harden had 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists; Trevor Ariza
had 27 points including 5-7 3-pointers; and Eric Gordon had 18 points and
6 assists.
- 10/28 Dallas activated A.J. Hammons and placed Dirk Nowitzki
(stomach illness) on IL.
- 10/26 Indiana defeated Dallas 130-121 in overtime in Indiana.
Indiana jumped out to an early 10-3 lead and it seemed that they led by
around 10 points most of the way through 3 quarters. Dallas scored the
first 9 points of the 4th quarter to tie the game and a 3-pointer by J.J.
Barea gave the Mavs their first lead at 97-96 with 8 minutes to go and the
game stayed close. Consecutive buckets gave Indiana a 114-110 lead with
48 seconds remaining. Dirk Nowitzki hit a jumper with 29 seconds left.
Jeff Teague (Ind) only hit 1-2 FT with 15 seconds to go to leave the door
open. Unselfish passing found an open Harrison Barnes at the elbow and he
swished a 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds remaining. Myles Turner (having an
outstanding game) missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and we had overtime in
the season opener. Dallas out-scored Indiana 30-21 in the 4th quarter.
The teams combined for only 7 points in the first 3 1/2 minutes of
overtime, but consecutive 3-pointers gave Indiana a 125-118 lead with a
minute remaining and a dunk on the break after a Dallas turnover basically
sealed the game [a Dallas 3-pointer and 3 Indiana free throws capped the
scoring]. Indiana out-scored Dallas 15-6 in overtime. Dallas shot 18-48
3-pointers - 1 off the team (and NBA) record for 3-point attempts. Barnes
had 19 points and 9 rebounds, Nowitzki had 22 points including 4-9
3-pointers and 8 rebounds, Deron Williams had 25 points including 5-8
3-pointers and 7 assists, and J.J. Barea had 22 points and 6 assists. For

offensive, and 4 blocks; Paul George had 25 points including 4-5
3-pointers, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists; Teague had 20 points on 5-15 FG and
10-13 FT, 8 assists, and 3 steals; and Monta Ellis had 19 points including
7-11 FG, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals.
- 10/26 Dallas placed A.J. Hammons and Devin Harris (injured left big
toe) on IL.
- 10/25 Announced that Devin Harris will wear a walking boot for 3
weeks for his injured left big toe. The injury occurred during Friday's
Dallas-Denver game.
- 10/22 Dallas released Jonathan Gibson, Kyle Collinsworth, Jaleel
Cousins, Keith Hornsby, and C.J. Williams.
- 10/21 Dallas finished the 2016-17 preseason with a record of 2-5.
- 10/21 Denver defeated Dallas 101-75 in Denver in a preseason game.
The whistles were blowing like crazy in the 1st quarter and the only
highlight was that Harrison Barnes finally had a good performance. But he
was the only highlight for Dallas in the whole game as the Mavs laid a big
egg (even for preseason) and Denver led 51-33 at the half and their lead
hung around 30 points most of the 2nd half. Only Wesley Matthews (10
points) was in double-digits scoring. J.J. Barea (sprained left elbow)
and Quincy Acy (sprained right foot) did not play.
- 10/19 Houston defeated Dallas 106-91 in Dallas in a preseason game.
The Dallas again went with playing groups, with the expected regular
season starters getting about 26 minutes of game time together. But they
didn't do well as the Rockets took new coach Mike D'Antoni's philosophy to
heart and short 7-11 3-pointers to open the game and go up 26-8. But the
2nd unit did much better and Houston only led by 5 after 1. The starters
did do better in the 3rd quarter, but still had lapses as coach Carlisle
took a timeout to yell at his team (and I think specifically Wesley
Matthews, but wasn't sure what specifically he did wrong). But the 2nd
unit had a a good game and those contenting for the final reoster spots
played the last 7 1/2 minutes. Matthews had 15 points and 5 rebounds and
Dirk Nowitzki had 12 points and 5 rebounds for the only Mavs in
double-digits. J.J. Barea (sprained left elbow) and Quincy Acy (sprained
right foot) did not play.
- 10/18 J.J. Barea suffered a sprained left elbow during Thursday's
practice.
- 10/18 Dallas exercised their 17-18 option for Justin Anderson.
- 10/17 Dallas signed Jaleel Cousins.
- 10/16 Dallas released Jameel Warney.
- 10/14 Phoenix defeated Dallas 112-107 in a preseason game in
Dallas. Dallas went with playing groups of players at a time as the 5
starters each played 19:38 minutes, the 2nd group (plus 1) played 16:22
minutes, and the deep bench 3rd group (plus 1) played the entire 4th
quarter. The game stayed close with the largest lead just 11 points.
Deron Williams had 17 points, Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points including 4-13
FG and 8 rebounds, Justin Anderson had 13 points, and Jonathan Gibson had
13 points. Quincy Acy (sprained right foot) and J.J. Barea (rest) did not
play.
- 10/11 Dallas defeated Oklahoma City 114-109 in a preseason game in
Dallas. The Mavs went with rotation players the entire 1st half and built
up a 20 point lead late in the 2nd quarter. And the rotation players,
except for Dwight Powell and Justin Anderson, sat the entire 2nd half (and
those 2 sat in the 4th quarter) while Russell Westbrook and Kyle Singler
played the entire 3rd quarter and Oklahoma City out-scored Dallas 40-26 in
the 3rd to tie the game at 82-82. And it was pure preseason junk for the
4th quarter where happily overtime was avoided. J.J. Barea had 15 points
(11 in the 1st, including a few layups), Deron Williams had 11 points, and
Powell had 16 points and 7 rebounds. Wesley Matthews (rest), Quincy Acy
(sprained right foot), and Salah Mejri (right knee surgery) did not play.
- 10/8 Quincy Acy suffered a sprained right ankle during the
Milwaukee game.
- 10/8 Milwaukee defeated Dallas 88-74 in a preseason game in
Madison, Wisconsin. The Mavs shot poorly throughout the game and
Milwaukee led most of the game. Dwight Powell had 15 points including 6-8
FG and 7 rebounds and Seth Curry had 11 points for the only Mavs in
double-digits. Dirk Nowitzki (rest), Devin Harris (left toe surgery), and
Salah Mejri (surgery) did not play.
- 10/3 Dallas defeated Charlotte 95-88 in a preseason game in Dallas.
Seth Curry went nuts in the 3rd quarter (13 points) to help Dallas build a
large lead. The lineup that played in the 4th quarter was pure preseason
junk that struggled to score, but a couple of baskets with about 90 seconds
left prevented the dreaded preseason overtime. Curry finished with 20
points including 5-6 3-pointers and J.J. Barea had 11 points for the only
other Mav in double-digits. Andrew Bogut (rest), Dirk Nowitzki (rest),
Devin Harris (left toe surgery), Deron Williams (sports hernia surgery),
and Salah Mejri (surgery) did not play.
- 10/1 New Orleans defeated Dallas 116-102 in a preseason game in
Boisier City, Louisiana. New Orleans build up a double-digit lead in the
2nd quarter, but Dallas came back in the 3rd quarter and actually held
small leads, but New Orleans opened the 4th quarter strong and pulled
away. Harrison Barnes had 12 points, Dwight Powell had 14 points, Seth
Curry had 12 points, and A.J. Hammons had 13 points. Dirk Nowitzki (rest),
Andrew Bogut (rest), Wessley Matthews (rest), Deron Williams (sports
hernia surgery), Devin Harris (left toe surgery), and Salah Mejri
(surgery) did not play.

- 7/7 In the Orlando Summer League, Orlando(Blue) defeated Dallas
96-94. Vander Blue had 17 points and Marquis Teague had 14 points and 5
assists.
- 7/6 The July Moratorium ended at 11 pm CT Wednesday night and
Dallas wasted no time and signed Golden State to a 4 year, $94 million
contract. [I haven't seen an official announcement that Golden State
rescinded their qualifying offer to Barnes, so he is a restricted free
agent and Golden State has 3 days to match the offer. But Golden State
can not do so and have enough money to sign free agent Kevin Durant (and
actually need to renounce Barnes and make a trade (reports are Andrew
Bogut) to have enough money).]
- 7/6 In the Orlando Summer League, Dallas defeated Charlotte 84-81.
Darius Adams had 25 points and 6 assists and Vander Blue had 16 points and
7 rebounds.
- 7/4 Dallas has reportedly reached a 2 year, $40 million agreement
to re-sign Dirk Nowitzki, with the 2nd year at the player's option. The

- 7/4 Golden State has reportedly reached a 1 year, $2.9 million
contract agreement with Dallas free agent Zaza Pachulia. The agreement
can not be signed until the July Moratorium ends July 7.
- 7/4 Rumors are that Golden State will trade Andrew Bogut to Dallas
as part of their moves to free up money to sign Kevin Durant (who has
agreed to sign with Golden State). Details of what Dallas will send back
(probably nothing more than a conditional pick as Golden State doesn't
want salary going back) have not been announced.
- 7/4 In the Orlando Summer League, Orlando White defeated Dallas
92-85. Vander Blue had 23 points and Marquis Teague had 13 points, 5

to re-signed Dwight Powell. The agreement can not be signed until the
July Moratorium ends July 7
- 7/2 Dallas has reportedly reached a 4 year, $94 million contract
agreement with Golden State restricted free agent Harrison Barnes. The
agreement can not be signed until the July Moratorium ends July 7 - and
then Golden State will have 3 days to match the offer [but likely won't as
they will be spending their free agent money on Kevin Durant - reports are
that Golden State will have to renounce their rights to Barnes to free up
money for the Durant signing, which would make him an unrestricted free
agent and Golden State would not have the option to match the offer].
- 7/2 In the Orlando Summer League, Oklahoma City defeated Dallas
86-85. Brandon Ashley had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Andre Dawkins had
16 points.
- 7/1 Dallas free agent Chandler Parsons has reportedly reached a 4
year, $94.8 million to sign with Memphis. The contract can not be
formally signed until the July Moratourium ends July 7.
