A coupon brought me into El Pollo Loco, a chain of Flame-Grilled Mexican Chicken restaurants that
recently moved into El Paso. The prices are fairly reasonable to begin with, but getting an extra discount
was definitely an incentive to get me to try this place over a local competitor, Pepe's Chicken that is
located about a block down the street.
El Pollo Loco offers a more varied menu than Pepe's and most of the places that specialize in chicken. If you want something other than chicken you are mostly out of luck at El Pollo Loco, but it is served in a variety of styles including the grilled chicken meals, tacos, burritos, and salads. The Ultimate Pollo Bowl is somewhat like the salads except it is served on a bed of rice instead of lettuce, and sour cream is used as a topping instead of salad dressing. The grilled chicken breast, guacamole, pinto beans, cheddar cheese, and pico de gallo offer a refreshing meal that is especially good during the hot El Paso summers. I would not rate this as an especially good example of Mexican food, but it was better than average for chain restaurant Mexican food. I was particularly impressed by the fact that none of the ingredients tasted as if they had been sitting around for very long before being served. There was really nothing by which to judge the restaurant on my "heat index," since the only spice you will get is from the salsas and chiles available on the salsa bar. The Ultimate Pollo Bowl comes with pico de gallo, but this is served at the edge of the bowl and can easily be omitted if you prefer a non-spicy meal. |
