Martha's Mexican Restaurant
7327 Alameda Ave.El Paso, TX
(915) 772-6764
There are quite a few burrito restaurants and take-out places along Alameda Avenue, but Martha's Mexican
Restaurant seems to be one of the few remaining sit-down establishments. Serving comida corrida
lunches with a different entrée every day (actually I think two choices are available every day Mon.-Fri.) as
well as enchilada and flauta specials in the evening, the prices are probably pretty competitive with the
take-out places. Actually the breakfast menu is the only one that looked expensive to me compared to
other restaurants.
I tried the Green Enchiladas since they were one of the evening specials for $3.99
(you get a choice of beef, chicken, or cheese with either red or green sauce). I asked for a scoop
of sour cream, and I ended up with some delicious enchiladas suizas made with some
very good chicken (mostly white meat)-- in fact I really struggle to find suizas this good
in El Paso and I have yet to find any on the west side. I found out later that they were made
with lard, although the refried beans had a definite smokey flavor that was the telltale sign
that these were not vegetarian. Even though I usually do not like food made with lard, and it
always give me a bad aftertaste (including this time), I really liked the food here-- the beans
were not greasy and the enchiladas had just the right amount of sauce, cheese, and chicken
(as well as sour cream). I would have even liked the green enchiladas without the sour cream
(and this is very unusual for El Paso).
Flautas are also available on the evening special, but there is not a wide choice of food items available
at the special prices.
The main problem I had was that the Lemonade came from a mix (I get used to it being homemade to
the point that I forget to ask). Also I tried the Guacamole to see if I might like the flautas, but it was liquefied
and a definite disappointment.
