It would be easier here to list the things I don't like than to run through the long list of things I think are
good points about Mi Mexico Bonito.
From just one visit I was extremely impressed by the Tortilla Soup (ordered from a list of "Especiales" that were not from the menu). This is made from a recipe of the owner's grandmother and includes a huge amount of tortillas and white cheese, mixed with fresh avocado. On top is a chipotle chile that is the key to the soup's flavor (you cut up the chile and let the juices seep into the soup, and at the same time eat the chile if you wish). The other place I have eaten tortilla soup is Amigos at 2000 Montana, and I will have to say there is no comparison-- MMB has brought in a dish from the Mexican interior that blows away the standard border fare. Where Mi Mexico Bonito falls flat is when they try to do border fare. I ordered an Enchilada that was slightly above average for El Paso, but the Chile Relleno was greasy, full of seeds, and utterly forgettable. The restaurant is spotlessly clean including the restrooms. Seafood is their specialty, and I suspect pretty good. It is open every day for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. I understand that some of the best items are served at breakfast, although I have not tried them. |
