Billings does not have the variety of Asian food found in Missoula, but it does have a fair number of
Chinese restaurants. There was quite a bit of information that could be gleaned from the telephone
directory that included not only the locations of the restaurants, but also the menus of many of them.
Mayflower looked to be the most promising of the restaurants, particularly for tofu dishes.
Upon arriving it looked as if the great majority of customers were eating from the buffet. Fortunately, the menu was extensive enough to offer some interesting looking dishes. Unlike Hong Kong Chef in Missoula, though, it seemed that the kitchen had very little demand for special dishes. I wanted to order from the kitchen not only to get a vegetarian meal, but to get something fresh that was made using traditional Chinese cooking styles. Although the tofu dish I ordered was good, it was not memorable enough for me to be able to write a description when I got home. To me the food was perfectly decent, but it was the kind of ordinary Chinese food I would eat when I am in a hurry and do not have a lot of time to spend on my lunch hour. Mayflower may have some special dishes, but I did not find out what they are on my visit. |
