It's a good thing Chuy's serves decent Mexican food because it is hard to find anything within a hundred miles of
Van Horn, much less something that would merit a stop for a meal. Chuy's has attained some fame by the fact
that John Madden has stopped here while taking his bus across the country. The walls of Chuy's are lined with
pictures and memorabilia of John Madden and other football legends.
Chuy's is also known for its Mexican food. As far as I can tell this is the easternmost outpost of El Paso style Mexican food that serves the dark red chile instead of the cheesy, comino flavored enchiladas typical of Tex-Mex. This is the old-style El Paso food, made with lard, that has always been found along the border, but which is somewhat scarce in El Paso itself now that people are more health conscious. Personally I love the Red Enchiladas at Chuy's, but they leave a bad aftertaste because of the lard to which I am not accustomed (I would have liked this type of food when I first moved to the border area). Still, I think Chuy's is about the best there is for quite a distance east of El Paso. |
