Ivar's Fish Bar is the downscale, fast-food version of Ivar's Acres of Clams, located next door. The fish bar
(or "seafood bar", as it is called on Ivar's web site) has a take-out counter where food can be purchased to
go or to eat at one of the several covered picnic tables located on the waterfront (this may or may not be a
good idea, depending on the weather). It is customary to give any leftover fish to the seagulls lurking
nearby, if you can manage to leave anything unconsumed.
The reality is that I would not hesitate to eat just about anything on the menu at any time. The Halibut Fish and Chips are probably the most popular item. I have been sampling this delicacy throughout the Northwest (Washington, Oregon, and California) for over twenty years, and I have had much better versions at other establishments. Still, Ivar's is better than most places, and I like the halibut quite a bit. Salmon Fish and Chips are also available. This is probably not the greatest salmon in the world, but just the fact that this item is served is quite unusual. I think I like the salmon and halibut equally. The Clam Chowder is a good choice for the frequent cool Northwest days. I would rate it excellent (five stars) were it not for the fact that I became spoiled on an extended trip to the Boston area, where I think the best clam chowder in the country is served. Still, I would probably rate the chowder as the best dish served at Ivar's Fish Bar. You will save a substantial amount of cash by ordering the take-out here as opposed to dining at Acres of Clams next door. This food might not be quite as gourmet, but I am a firm believer that the Seattle experience should include both upscale restaurants and some of the better budget places, in which I include Ivar's Fish Bar. |
