China 2009

This is my experience in Beijing, China in the Summer of 2009. If you came to this webpage first, it's better if you start from the beginning of the story.

[Underwater Pagoda]

At Su Causeway at West Lake in Hangzhou.

We took a boat ride out on the lake. This is one of the underwater pagodas on West Lake. There are three of these pagodas in the lake forming a triangle. Again, the tour guide wasn't clear about the significance of these pagodas.

After I got back home in the USA, I did some googling and this is what I found out about the three underwater pagodas in West Lake in Hangzhou. They are called "Three Pools Reflecting the Moon" or "Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon" depending on the translation. There were originally put there by Su Shi, governor of Hangzhou, presumably at the same time when he created the Su Causeway.

Why did he do that? No reason is given. Perhaps it was just decorative.

The Leifeng Pagoda is in the background.
