China 2009

This is my experience in Beijing, China in the Summer of 2009. If you came to this webpage first, it's better if you start from the beginning of the story.

[Mirror Clock Vase]

At the Hongcun Village at Huangshan.

This is the mirror-clock-vase combination that was a popular decoration in the front living room of every residence at Hongcun. On the long narrow table, notice the mirror to the left, a vase to the right and a clock in the center. The Mandarin Chinese word for vase is similar in sound to calm and peace. The Mandarin Chinese word for mirror is similar in sound to quiet and tranquility. The Mandarin Chinese word for ringing clock is similar to whole life. So when the clock rings, the sight and sounds translate to "living your whole life in peace and tranquility". Kind of poetic in a way.

The cylindrical porcelain objects with holes in them are hat holders. Businessmen normally wore a hat when they were out doing business. When they return home, they put their hat on these holders. It also lets the household know that the man of the house is at home.
