China 2009

By Al Wong

This is my experience in Beijing, China in the Summer of 2009. If you came to this webpage first, it's better if you start from the beginning of the story.

[Wood Carvings]

At the Hongcun Village at Huangshan.

More woodwork at Chengzhi Hall in what was the women's quarters.

The story goes unrelated men were not allowed to see the single women of the household. So when strange men came to visit for business, the women would go upstairs to the second floor and peer out of those square openings (above in the picture) to see the men.

On the ground floor, the temperature is 120 million degrees inside with no air conditioning. It must have been much worse on the second floor looking down.
