This is my experience in Beijing, China in the Summer of 2009.
If you came to this webpage first, it's better if you
start from the beginning of the story.
At Xi'an
This is the introductory sign at the entrance
of the Shaanxi Museum. I just realized the text is barely readable
in this resized image.
The English translation is a bit off
but I'll transcribe it verbatim here, warts and all:
Shaanxi History Museum was set up and opened to the public
on June 20, 1991. It was the first modernized museum in China and
was affirmed as the first group of the "Education Base of Patriotism"
and the "4A-Level" of scenic spot by the Central Publicity Ministry
and the National Tourism Administration. It is also known at the first
"Demonstration Model of Adolescent Moral Education" in Shaanxi
province. The museum occupies an area of 70,000 square meters in
which the built-up area is 56,000 square meters and the exhibition
area is 11,000 square meters. About 375,000 pieces (sets) of historical
relics are collected in the museum, among which the bronzes of the
Shang & Zhou dynasties, the pottery figures of successive dynasties,
the gold & silver wares of the Tang dynasty and the mural paintings of
the Tang dynasty are with distinguishing features. The 18 pieces (sets)
of the national treatures and the 1907 pieces (sets) of the first grade
relics are in the visitors' good graces.
Shaanxi History Museum is praised as the "Bright star of the
ancient capital, cultural treasures of China" for its imposing building
of the Tang style, rich collections, distinsctive way of display and
qualified services. Since the opening, over 10 million visitors from home
and abroad had visited the museum. Now relying on the profound
cultural details of the Shaanxi province, Shaanxi History Museum will
continuously make innovations to recieve the guests from the whole
world.
