6/30/99 Lion Guarding Forbidden City Entrance, Beijing
This is one of the lions guarding the outermost courtyard in
the Forbidden City. This one is the male lion as one of its
front paws in on a ball. (The lion on the other side
(not shown)
is a female lion which is denoted by the fact she is playing
with a small baby lion under her paw.) It is interesting to
note that all the lion statues you see guarding banks,
museums and other public buildings throughout the world
are based on the lion statues here in the Forbidden City.
The scan of this picture doesn't show it but the detail
on this statue is exquisite.
