China 1999

This is my experience in China in the Summer of 1999. If you came to this webpage first, it's better if you start from the beginning of the story.

[Lion Statue] 6/30/99 Lion Guarding Forbidden City Entrance, Beijing
This is one of the lions guarding the outermost courtyard in the Forbidden City. This one is the male lion as one of its front paws in on a ball. (The lion on the other side (not shown) is a female lion which is denoted by the fact she is playing with a small baby lion under her paw.) It is interesting to note that all the lion statues you see guarding banks, museums and other public buildings throughout the world are based on the lion statues here in the Forbidden City.

The scan of this picture doesn't show it but the detail on this statue is exquisite.
