There are only around 30 native trees to the original (pre-climate-change) ecosystems of Seattle. The extent to which some of these will be able to continue living here is a good question. As such, casual observers can help by cultivaing a community knowledge of what is going on month to month as the specimens remaining try to survive. That is my intention here, along with my parallel intention of bringing in speakers of other languages.
I guess the several near-range species I choose to leave out are the paper birch, which reaches just into Bellingham I think, and the Ponderosa Pine, which comes near, but not really naturally into Puget Sound, with the only place I know it seems natural being around Fort Lewis, which I think just includes plants, and not natural occurences. I also leave out subalpine species (Noble Fir being the most likely sealevel candidate I think). There may be others which I'm just not aware of that are near species, but I think I have the actual natives correct.
I also include several species, red and blue elderberry, and indian plum, which by stature may be judged as shrubs by some, but other aspects I like and wish to personally see as trees.
Except for ASL, I will include the same language subset as my other projects for now, and will encourage others as I can do so practically. I am hoping the ASL users will be attracted to this work despite that omission.
