The biggest lesson of history is that crimes are most abusive to the criminal, no matter whether that criminal "gets away with it", or not.
The more fantasy you build in your behavior, the more life will eat at you; the more your mind and your experience will be impoverished. Your mind will experience more and more cognitive dissonance. The people who could have helped you most will be distanced from you, made unreachable by you, not by external forces, but by your own bad behavior that you may less and less be able to realize the nature of. Even then, when you do realize it, should you try to claw back the reality you threw away, your realiztion of the hell you have created for yourself and others will be increasingly horrible, making it increasingly difficult to reverse your situation. If you have stayed with the lies long enough, you become condemned by your stupidity, your mental laziness, to a life melting hell you cannot escape.
