If you are trying to talk poor people into doing things against their self-interest, the first thing you would do is con them into believing in some sky-daddy that tells them their suffering gives them a better chance to live forever with him in the sky. Next you'll have to con them into needing to have faith in the skydaddy, no matter what bad things happen. Something like the story of Job would be very useful. Finally, you'd need to convince them that their fellows that died are not important, but what is important is their faith, and their loyalty to the skydaddy.
