Preparing the trikes for a gradual 15 mile descent

Jack, John, and Doreen head for the first tunnel at the beginning of the Hiawatha Trail.

Doreen follows Jack into the 1.6 mile abyss,

and out to the other side.

The St. Paul Pass tunnel begins in Montana on mountain time and ends in Idaho on Pacific time. We exited the tunnel 40 minutes before we entered it.

Most of the trail surface is fairly smooth, hard-packed gravel.

Soon we enter another tunnel, one of ten on the trail. (Nine are currently open.)

Some of the tunnels blasted through solid rock are unlined.

Others use heavy timbers or concrete.

Doreen observes a trestle we will soon cross.

Jack looks over the 250 foot drop on one of the trestles.

It's a long way down over the cable railing. The walkway on either side of the riding surface is open boards.

Fifteen miles of downhill is not really a difficult accomplishment.

Rest rooms are located several places along the trail, and at the shuttle pickup point at Pearson.

Trikes and bikes are loaded loaded onto the shuttle.

For the really hearty, you can drive down the road to Pearson, then ride up and back on the trail.
