Dear Annette,
My name is Mark and I have been on a vent with a trach since March
of 1984. I used to have a problem with scar tissue around the trach
until 1986 when I found a different proceedure for trach care. You need
to wash around the stoma (hole in the neck) with a solution of peroxide
and water wipe dry and then apply bacitracin ointment around the stoma
with a Q-Tip, You also apply the ointment to the drain sponge. When you
first start, this will need to be done three times a day. It will take
about 3 to 6 weeks for the scar tissue to go away.
Then you can use soap and water in place of peroxide and water.
Continue to use the bacitracin and do this twice daily from then on. I
have been doing the twice daily routine since 1986 and the scar tissue
has never returned. I hope this helps
Sincerely,
Mark Geisler.
