Annette,
I wish I would have known you in C'dale. We miss the area terribly,
especially my daughter. Disability is just no big deal there but oh my
it's another story here in IN. Our daughter was repeatedly asked how it
felt to have disabled parents by her teachers. I had forgotten what it
was like to be gawked at. Dear Erv, at Wareco Gas on Wall St. would
always pump my gas for me and he trained all his employees to do the same
when they saw disabled plates. When Illinois passed the law, I
hand-delivered it to every gas station. Erv really took it to heart. I
had the Ill. Sec. of State give him and Phillips 66 an award for their
commitment. I have to wait for my husband or Tara to be with me now if I
want gas. Parking is horrendous. Every disabled parking space has a
parking meter which I can't feed. I never knew Illinois was sooooooo
progressive until we moved away! The apathy here is unbelievable and
people with disabilities really get the short end of the stick.
You and I have something else in common. I too contracted polio from the
shot. 1 in 5 million! Two yrs. ago I got encephalitus from a mosquito
bite. 1 in a million! I also had a spinal fusion for severe scoliosis and
wore a body cast for a yr. I sure hope you get your Shiley problems
worked out. You and I have the same kind of luck but we keep on keeping
on!
Take care!
Val
