I am also totally dependent on the vent to breathe, since 1989 when I was
21. When I go out I take a backpack with: an ambu bag, portable suction
machine, a handfull of saline "fish" and 3 suction kits (catheter & glove).
Someone is always with me, so we figure they could just "bag" me if there's
trouble.

Once, while I was still in rehab, I was on the way to a movie and the vent
stopped. I had to be bagged until we got back to the hospital, about 30
minutes. The last time I had a MRI, a paramedic bagged me during the whole
thing, about 60 minutes total.
