Dear Dr. Quiroga ,
my name is Maureen. I have been ventilator and trach dependent since 1988.
In November of 1988 I coded and had trouble breathing. I was rushed to the
emergency room. They tried to wean me off the vent, but it was not
successful. It was a big adjustment at first. But over time I became used to
it. My quality of life is still good despite being on A ventilator and
trach. I still have an active life. My life is very important to me. If I
didn't have the trach or ventilator If I would be Missing out on life. I have
muscular dystrophy. Due to muscular dystrophy my lung muscles have weakened
causing me to use a ventilator. I was in the ICU unit for three months.
After being hospitalized I have only had a couple of infections. I have
healthy lungs. I haven't had an infection for about five years. I am
Managing very well with trach ventilation . have a cuffless trach which
allows me to speak. Currently I use an LP6 ventilator which is set on assist
control. ..
