COURSE OVERVIEW: "Communication Augmentation for
Non-Speaking Individuals" is a three-credit online course
examining clinical issues of augumentative and alternative
communication (AAC) for children and adults. The course will
emphasize case studies and practical solutions in AAC. Both
high technology and other less complex communication
strategies will be considered.
Through UW Distance Learning, students participate in online
discussions with faculty and with
other students throughout the world. All students start the
course at the same time and participate, through the use of
e-mail discussion groups, in a stimulating exchange of
ideas. Students discuss and focus their assignments on specific
cases, getting feedback which will have clinical relevance to
them.
Students will also learn how to use some of the resources in
AAC and adaptive technology, available on the Internet and
World Wide Web, to stay current with developments in the
field after they complete the course.
PREREQUISITE: A working familiarity with electronic mail is
required to participate in this course.
ACADEMIC CREDIT: Participants may earn three (3) academic
quarter credits of either REHAB C458 or SPHSC C453.
