Volume One Number Six

Time for Nominations

2004 Evergreen Awards

Outstanding nonprofits will be recognized again at the start of Nonprofit Service Month this year. Nominations are invited from anyone who knows about an organization that deserves greater notice -- board members, volunteers, donors, staff beneficiaries. The deadline is March 1 and the simple nomination form is available at http://www.tess.org/pages/2004EvergreenAwards.html.

Update

Washington's Nonprofits by the Numbers

8,663 Washington state charities reported $32,674,384,730 in revenue on returns filed with the Internal Revenue Service during 2003. There are many more nonprofit organizations in Washington state, of course, that are too small, or are not required, to file reports with the IRS.

Follow-up

Status of Electronic Notification Legislation (for nonprofit boards)

SB 6188 (Authorizing electronic notice and other communications within the Washington nonprofit corporation act) has been introduced in the 2004 legislative session (sponsored by Senators Luke Esser, Adam Kline and Stephen Johnson). The Senate Judiciary Committee has given the bill a "do pass" recommendation.  It will require final action by the Senate, and approval in the house, to become law. A similar bill (HB 1098) introduced in the 2003 session by Representatives Patricia Lantz and Mike Carroll, unanimously passed the House that year but was not acted upon in the Senate. To check on the status or see the text of either, click here and type the bill's number in the query box.

Links to background on this proposal can be found in the December 2003 issue of Observing Nonprofits.
