Dallas used a 12-5 run to go up 58-45 with 2:30 to go. Dallas led 64-53

led in the 20s the rest of the quarter. Minnesota led 93-69 after 3 (with

91-74 with 4:40 remaining and Dallas made a final push by scoring the next
9 points to pull within 83-91 with 1:45 left. But DeMarcus Cousins had a
layup with 90 seconds left and there wasn't enough time for another push
(a meaningless Dallas 3-pointer with a seconds left made the final margin
closer). New Orleans shot 40.4% FG and Dallas shot 38.6% FG. Barnes had
26 points including 7-10 FT and 6 rebounds, Dennis Smith had 16 points
(including 11 in the 4th) on 7-20 FG, J.J. Barea had 13 points and 5

within 84-89 with 6 minutes to go, but Utah then rattled off the next 11
points to take a 100-84 lead with 3 minutes remaining. The teams sent the
scrubs in less than a minute later. Dallas shot 49% FG in the 1st half
and just 40% FG in the 2nd, while Utah shot 42.5% FG in the 1st and 52.5%
in the 2nd. For the first time this season, Nowitkzi led the way with 18
points (including 10 in the 4th quarter) on 7-11 FG and 4-5 3-pointers and
had 5 rebounds. Barea had 17 points on 7-11 FG and Devin Harris had 15
points and 6 assists - no other Mav was in double-digits. Harris played
in his 500th game as a Maverick. For Utah, Hood had 25 points including
9-15 FG and 5-9 3-pointers; Ricky Rubio had 20 points including 4-8
3-pointers and 6 assists, and Rudy Gobert had 17 points on 4-5 FG and 9-12
FT, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 blocks.
10/30 Dallas activated Gian Clavell and placed Dorian Finney-Smith
(sore left knee) on IL.
10/28 Philadelphia defeated Dallas 112-100 in Dallas. Philadelphia
used a 19-5 run to take a 27-14 lead with 4:15 left. Philly led 32-23
after 1. There were lots of 3s as each team made 5. Philadelphia held a
single-digit lead most of the 2nd quarter. Consecutive buckets inside
briefly gave Dallas a 54-53 lead with 2 minutes remaining. Philadelphia
led 57-56 at the half. Dallas held a 76-74 lead with 5 minutes left, but
would only connect on 2 free throws the rest of the quarter (missing 7
shots) and Philly used a 15-2 run to go up 89-78 after 3. Dallas re-found
the basket and consecutive 3-poitners opened the 4th quarter. Philly
scored 8 straight points to go up 105-96 with 4:20 remaining. A 3-pointer
by J.J. Barea pulled Dallas within 107-109 with 35 seconds to go. Joel
Embiid got a layup for Philadelphia with 15 seconds left, but Harrison
Barnes nailed a clutch 3-pointer to make it just a 1 point game with 8
seconds left. Jerryd Bayless hit 1-2 FT on an intentional foul. Out of
timeouts, Yogi Ferrell raced up the court and was fouled with .2 seconds
left as he attacked the basket. But he missed the 1st free throw. He
intentionally missed the 2nd, but Dallas was unable to tap the ball in.
Barnes had 25 points including 7-12 3-pointers, Wesley Matthews had 19
points and 6 rebounds, Ferrell had 17 points, and Barea had 15 points as
Dallas had 6 players in double-digits. For Philly, Embiid had 23 points
and 9 rebounds; rookie Ben Simmons (looking good) had 23 points including
10-15 FG, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists; and T.J. McConnell had 15 points on
7-10 FG and 8 assists.
10/28 Dorian Finney-Smith (left knee tendinitis) did not play in
the Philadelphia game.
10/28 Dallas activated Devin Harris and placed Gian Clavell on IL.
10/26 Memphis defeated Dallas 96-91 in Memphis. Dallas held an
early 8-6 lead, but Memphis then went on a 17-2 run to go up 23-10 with
2:25 left. Memphis left 28-14 after 1 as Dallas shot just 6-22 FG.
Memphis opened the 2nd quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 38-16 lead with
9:30 remaining. Memphis led 54-35 at the half. Dallas shot just 27% FG
in the half (Memphis didn't shoot well either at 40.5% FG, but also made 7
3-pointers). Consecutive buckets by Marc Gasol gave Memphis a 64-44 lead
with 6:45 left. Dallas finally got their act together and started
chipping away at Memphis' lead. 8 straight points pulled Dallas within
65-70 with 2 minutes to go. Memphis left 86-76 after 3. Dallas
out-scored Memphis 33-22 in the 3rd quarter. A banked 3-pointer by J.J.
Barea pulled Dallas within 80-82 with 7:35 left and the game stayed close
the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Dirk Nowitzki and 3 free throws by
Barea gave Dallas an 86-84 lead with 4 minutes remaining, but Mike Conley
answered with a 3-pointer and layup to put Memphis back on top. A layup
by Wesley Matthews pulled Dallas within 88-90 with 25 seconds left.
Conley hit 2 free throws on an intentional foul and Harrison Barnes nailed
a quick 3-pointer with 16 seconds left. Conly hit 2 more free throws to
keep it a 3 point game. Dennis Smith could not get a good look at a
3-pointer and forced a bad shot with 3 seconds left. It wasn't the
prettiest of games as Dallas shot 34% FG and Memphis shot 41% FG. Barnes
had 22 points, Matthews had 18 points including 4-8 3-pointers, and
Nowitzki had 14 points and 7 rebounds for the only Mavs in double-digits.
For Memphis, Gasol had 25 points and 13 rebounds, Conley had 22 points
including 10-12 FT, and Tyreke Evans had 19 points and 6 rebounds.
10/26 Dorian Finney-Smith (left knee tendinitis) did not play in
the Memphis game.
10/26 Dallas activated Gian Clavell and placed Devin Harris
(personal reasons) on IL.
10/25 Dallas defeated Memphis 103-94 in Dallas. For the first time
this season, Dallas opened the game playing well. Dallas scored 13
straight points to take a 19-7 lead with 5:50 left and led 32-18 after 1
as Memphis shot just 7-20 FG. A bucket and 3-pointer to open the 2nd
quarter gave Dallas their largest lead at 37-18 with 10:50 to go. Memphis
finally woke up and responded with a 17-5 run to pull within 35-42 with
5:20 remaining. Dallas led 57-49 at the half. Dallas held a single-digit
lead the entire 3rd quarter as Memphis could get no closer than 3 points.
Dallas led 78-72 after 3. Memphis again pulled within 3 points at 80-83
with 9 minutes left, but Dallas then rattled off the next 9 points. A
3-pointer and runner by Mike Conley pulled Memphis within 92-98 with 2
minutes to go, but Yogi Ferrell answered with a 3-pointer and followed it up
with a pretty mid-range jumper to give Dallas an 11 point lead with a
minute left. Dallas had 6 players in double-digits including Dennis Smith
with 19 points and 5 assists, Harrison Barnes with 15 points including
4-13 FG and 6 rebounds, and Wesley Matthews with 16 points including 3-4
3-poitners. For Memphis, Marc Gasol had 26 points including 9-15 FG and
5-7 3-pointers and 11 rebounds and Conley had 21 points and 5 rebounds -
only one other Grizzly was in double-digits.
10/25 Dallas activated Devin Harris and placed Gian Clavell on IL.
10/23 Golden State defeated Dallas 133-103 in Dallas. Golden State
scored 12 straight points to take a double-digit lead midway through the
1st quarter and led 40-24 after 1. Golden State shot a white hot 65% FG
while Dallas shot just 40% FG. Dallas got back in the game with a 14-5
run to pull within 48-53 with 4:20 remaining and actually made it a 1
point game on a 3-pointer by Wesley Matthews with 1:45 to go. Golden
State led 65-62 at the half. Dallas out-scored Golden State 38-25 in the
2nd quarter. The 3rd quarter started off with a bizarre delay of game for
the Mavs (2nd of the game, so a technical) and got worse as Golden State
opened the quarter with a 18-6 run, capped by consecutive 3-pointers by
Klay Thompson, to take an 83-68 lead with 7:25 left. Dallas was able to
keep Golden State's lead in the low teens, but could get no closr than 10
points. Stepehn Curry hit a long jumper near the quarter's end to give
Golden State a 99-84 lead after 3. Curry had 12 points in the 3rd
quarter. 5 straight points by Kevin Durant gave Golden State a 107-85
lead with 10:35 to go and Dallas never recovered. And the scrubs played
poorly in this game so the final margin made the game look worse than it
really was. Dallas never led in the game. Golden State shot 56% FG and
Dallas shot 40% FG. Dallas did have 7 players in double-digits including
Matthews with 19 points and 3 steals, Harrison Barnes with 13 points and 7
rebounds, and J.J. Barea with 13 points and 8 assists. The Big 3
cominated for Golden State as Durant had 25 points including 9-15 FG and
4-6 3-pointers, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists; Curry had 29 points including
13-13 FT, 8 assists, and 4 steals; and Thompson had 21 points including
9-16 FG.
10/23 Dallas activated Dennis Smith.
10/21 Houston defeated Dallas 107-91 in Houston. With Dallas
struggling and Houston not, it was no surprise that Houston took a 62-39
lead at the half. Dallas shot just 35% FG and Houston shot 53% FG (in
fact, it could have been worse as Houston simply missed some open 3s).
James Harden had 26 points in the half. And this one was over really
early as Houston scored the 1st 7 points of the 3rd quarter to take a 30
point lead. Houston led 92-58 after 3. But give the Dallas scrubs credit
as they played well in the 4th and made the final margin not as lopsided
as the game really was. Dallas shot just 33% FG through 3 quarters, but
shot 48% FG in the 4th. Houston shot 52% FG through 3 quarters, but shot
48% FG in the 4th quarter. [Weird stat of the night: Houston shot 80% on
2-pointers (but just 11-47 3-pointers).] Yogi Ferrell had 19 points and 6
assists, J.J. Barea had 19 points and 5 rebounds, and Harrison Barnes had
14 points including 5-17 FG and 5 rebounds. For Houston (who was playing
without Chris Paul), James Harden had 29 points including 6-13 3-pointers
and 7 assists, Eric Gordon had 18 points, and Clint Capela had 13 points
and 10 rebounds.
10/21 Dallas placed Devin Harris (death in the family) on IL.
10/20 Sacramento defeated Dallas 93-88 in Dallas. Dallas took a 12
point lead midway through the 2nd quarter, but Sacramento would chip away
at Dallas' lead and the game was tied at 46-46 at the half. The game was
tied at 57-57 with 7:40 left and Sacramento went on a 10-2 "run" to go up
67-58 with 2 minutes to go - yup, just 12 points scored in an almost 6
minute span. Buddy Hield nailed a 3-pointer near the quarter's end to
give the Kings a 71-60 lead after 3. Dallas opened the 4th quarter strong
by scoring the first 12 points to breifly go up 72-71 with 9:40 remaining.
But Sacramento scored the next 4 points to retake the lead and would hold
a small lead the rest of the way (nothing larger than 6 points). Sacramento
held a 3 point lead with 45 seconds remiaing and Zach Randolph (Sac)
missed with 35 seconds left, but Dallas once again could not corral the
defensive rebound and Sacramento ran more time off the clock. George Hill
named a jumper with 16 seconds left to make it a 91-86 game was the rest
was just academic. Rebounding, rebounding rebounding - really sad since the
team was supposed to be focused on it after missing some critical boards in
the previous game. Sacramento out-rebounded Dallas 57-36 including 16-7
offensive. And just 7 offensive rebounds on a night where the team shot
poorly (41.3% FG - though Sacramento was only slightly better at 42.5% FG).
Harrison Barnes had 24 points, Yogi Ferrell had 14 points, and Dorian
Finney-Smith had 14 points including 5-6 FG and 3-4 3-pointers. Wesley
Matthews had a donut with 0-7 3-pointers (his only attempts) [not to pick
on him as a number of Mavs had poor outings]. For Sacramento, Hill had 21
points on 9-12 FG and 3-3 3-pointers and 5 rebounds, Randolph had 13
points including 5-15 FG and 6 rebounds, and Hield had 13 points
including 4-11 FG and 6 rebounds.
10/20 Devin Harris did not play in Sacramento game due to the death
of his brother. The team has told him to take as much time off as he needs.
10/20 Dallas activated Gian Clavell and placed Dennis Smith (sore
left knee) on IL.
10/18 In the first game of the 17-18 regular season, Atlanta
defeated Dallas 117-111 in Dallas. The game stayed closed most of the
way. Atlanta closed the 2nd quarter with a 14-2 run to take a 58-47 lead
at the half - the largest lead of the game. Dallas scored on their first
5 possessions of the 3rd quarter to pull within 59-62 and the game
remained close the rest of the way with neither team holding more than a 6
points lead. The game was tied at 82-82 after 3 and again tied at 111-111
with 1:15 to go. But Dallas could not corral the offensive rebounds down
the stretch and that killed them. Atlanta missed, but Dewayne Dedmon got
the putback with a minutes left. Dallas couldn't find a good shot and
Harrison's Barnes release (a miss anyway) came just after the shot clocked
expired for a turnover with 35 seconds remaining. Sacramento missed, but
Taurean Prince got the rebound and was fouled with 14 seconds left and hit
both free throws to make it a 4 point game. Wesley Matthews missed a
forced 3-pointer and 2 more Sacramento free throws from an intentional
foul capped the scoring. Matthews had 15 points on 5-9 3-pointers (and
0-3 2-pointeers), 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 turnovers; Barnes had 14 points
including 3-13 FG and 0-6 3-pointers and 7 rebounds; Nerlens Noel had 16
points on a perfect 6-6 FG and 4-4 FT, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks; and
rookie Dennis Smith had 16 points and 10 assists. Smith scored Dallas'
first points of the game on an impressive skying alley-oop dunk from
Matthews (Matthews also had an alley-oop pass to Noel shortly after Noel
entered the game for another highlight dunk). For Atlanta, it was really
a 2-man show as speed demon Dennis Schroder couldn't be stopped and had 28
points and 7 assists and Marco Belinelli had 20 points including 4-6
3-pointers. Rookie John Collins chipped in 14 points and 5 rebounds and
Prince had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
10/18 Dallas placed Gian Clavell, Seth Curry (stress reaction left
tibia), Josh McRoberts (lower extremity injury), and Johnathan Motley on
IL.
10/17 Dallas signed Gian Clavell to a 2-way contract.
10/14 Dallas released P.J. Dozier, Jameel Warney, and Maalik Wayns.
10/13 Dallas finished the 2016 preseason with a record of 4-2.
10/13 In a preseason game, Charlotte defeated Dallas 111-96 in
Charlotte. The Mavs played the game as a warmup to the regular season and
the game stayed close until the end as neither team held more than a 6
point lead until late in the 4th quarter. Charlotte scored 12 straight
points to take an 11 point lead with 4 minutes remaining and Dallas pulled
their key players a short time later. Harrison Barnes had 24 points and 5
rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki had 14 points and 9 rebounds. For Charlotte,
Kemba Walker had 18 points and Johnny O'Bryant had 15 points.
10/13 Seth Curry (stress reaction left tibia) did not play in the
Charlotte game.
10/13 Dallas signed Jameel Warney and released Brandon Ashley.
10/12 In a preseason game, Dallas defeated Atlanta 108-94 in
Atlanta. As it was the first night of a back-to-back, Dallas elected to
rest a number of their key players. Dennis Smith tweaked his left ankle
in the 2nd quarter and did not return - but it was a minor sprain and he
was able to play the next night. The Mavs reserves and camp fodder played
well and held a double-digit lead a good chunk of the game. Dallas shot
49% FG and Atlanta shot 39% FG. The Mavs won comfortably despite a large
free throw difference as Dallas shot 7-9 FT and Atanta shot 23-32 FT.
Gian Clavell had 19 points including 5-10 3-pointers, 5 rebounds, and 5
assists and Maxi Kleber had 16 points including 4-8 3-pointers. For
Atlanta, Kent Bazemore had 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists and
Taurean Prince had 11 points for the only Hawks in double-digits scoring.
10/12 Seth Curry (stress reaction left tibia) did not play in the
Atlanta game.
10/9 In a preseason game, Dallas defeated Orlando 99-96 in Dallas.
It was the 1st night of a back-to-back for Orlando and the Magic elected
to rest 6 key players. Despite that, Dallas was never able to really
build much of a lead. They did lead most of the game, but no larger than
11 points - disappointing as Dallas did use regular season lineups through
3 quarters. The deep reserves/camp fodder were barely able to hang on to
the win and a missed Magic 3-pointer at the final buzzer prevented the
dreaded preseason overtime. Dennis Smith had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 7
assists and Harrison Barnes had 14 points. For Orlando, D.J. Augustin had
24 points on 9-14 FG and 6-10 3-pointers and 5 assists and Jonathon
Simmons had 19 points.
10/9 Seth Curry (stress reaction left tibia) did not play in the
Orlando game.
10/7 Seth Curry is out indefinitely with a stress reaction in his
left tibia. He is out for at least a week and will be evaluated on a
weekly basis.
10/5 In a preseason game, Orlando defeated Dallas 112-89 in
Orlando. In the 2nd night of a back-to-back, Dallas left 7 key players at
home - and the game show it. Orlando used a big run spanning the 1st and
2nd quarters to build a big lead and led 64-46 at the half. The Mavs did
make a push in the 3rd quarter, but Orlando closed the quarter with a run
and Dallas never contested again. It was an ugly preseason game that made
you glad it wasn't televised and few people watched it. Orlando shot 48%
FG and Dallas shot 33% FG. Dennis Smith had 13 points and Yogi Ferrell
had 12 points. For Orlando, Aaron Gordon had 17 points and 10 reobunds in
20 minutes and Nikola Vucevic had 14 points.
10/5 Dorian Finney-Smith (sore knee) did not play in the Orlando game.
10/4 In a preseason game, Dallas defeated Chicago 118-71 in
Dallas. The Mavs played a more traditional game through 3 quarters (not pure
sets like the previous game) and held small leads through most of that
time frame. They built up a 14 point lead through 3 quarters. And then
the deep bench went nuts in the 4th quarter while Chicago's deep bench
could do nothing. The Mavs out-scored Chicago 44-11 in the 4th. Dallas
shot 50% FG while Chicago shot just 35% FG. Harris Barnes had 17 points
and Dennis Smith had 14 points. For Chicago Paul Zipser had 12 points and
Robin Lopez had 12 points. [In a very funny moment, Dennis Smith showed
his rookie-ness when Robin Lopez was switched on him defensively. Most
point guards drool when a center tries to defend them, but Smith couldn't
