FAQ's

These pages answer some common questions people have about the workings of mailing lists and describe many "tricks of the trade" that will make it easier and more enjoyable for you and other members...

I'm getting too much mail!

If you're overwhelmed by the volume of mail you're getting, there are at least three basic approaches. One is to give up and unsubscribe.

Another is to try the digest version of the list. Instead of many messages, you'll receive the list as a few big messages each containing a batch of postings. If there are limits on the number of messages you are allowed to receive, this is the better route.

The third and best approach is to use the features of your e-mail software to sort incoming mail automatically. If you're still dealing with dozens of e-mails in a big jumble in one mailbox, then you need to learn this!

Sorting or filtering e-mail:

Why can't I use HTML?

....

How do I turn off HTML? How do I send plain text?

....

Replying to somebody privately. How do I get their address?

....

I stopped receiving the list? Did I get banned?

If I Suspend or Remove you from the list you'll generally have plenty of warning!

What usually happens is your address starts "bouncing" e-mail back to the server as undeliverable. This can be because your mailbox fills up, your ISP has some kind of problem, or from some temporary breakdown in connectivity somewhere between the server and you. If you "bounce" enough messages in a short period of time, you'll be automatically unsubscribed.

The solution is to subscribe again. If it becomes a serious problem, contact me: mdevour@eskimo.com

How do I change from digest to list? From list to digest?

The software that runs the Silver List and Off Topic List treats the digest and regular list separately. You can sign up to get individual messages, the digest, or both!

To change from one to the other, unsubscribe from the one you are on and subscribe again to the one that you want. Follow the instructions on the Silver List or Off Topic List pages.

How do I get off this list?

Uuhhhm, you have to unsubscribe? <grin>

You're either getting a number of individual messages from the list with 'CS>' or 'SO>' in the Subject line, or a few big messages with Subjects that look something like: silver-somethingorother Digest V102 #999. The first one is the regular list, the second version is the Digest. 'CS>' means the Silver List, while 'SO>' is from the Silver Off Topic List.

Once you figure out which version you're getting and whether it's coming from the Silver List or the Silver Off Topic List, just follow the unsubscribe instructions on the Silver List or Silver Off Topic List pages.

Please do as much as you can to follow the instructions carefully. If it really doesn't work then something is wrong and you'll need my help. When all else fails, contact me: mdevour@eskimo.com

Be patient. It may take me a day or two to get to you.

My e-mail address changed, what do I do?

If you signed up under an e-mail address and now you have a new one, then you'll have to subscribe with the new address. Follow the instructions on the Silver List or Off Topic List pages.

If you can still access your old account, unsubscribe from there. If not, you won't be able to unsubscribe your old address while logged into your new account. If that's the case, let me know and I'll unsub your old address for you. Contact me at: mdevour@eskimo.com

Be patient. It may take me a day or two to get to you.
