On September 12, 2003, 46,372 nonprofit corporations were registered with the Washington Secretary of State in Olympia. Thirteen months earlier (on August 17, 2002), 44,680 were on the rolls.

Do we live in the “Hardest Place in Nation to Raise Money”?

A banner headline across the front page of one of our metropolitan dailies on August 14, 2003, announced that Seattle tops a list of 20 American cities in terms of how hard local charities have to work to raise money for their good causes. The figures look pretty depressing.

Putnam Barber argues that in spite of these statistics, we really don't know.

  • The 2004 Nonprofit Conference is scheduled for April 1, 2004, at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.  Jan Masaoka, Executive Director of San Francisco's CompassPoint, will lead the list of speakers, presenters and sessions. 
  • Fred Jarrett was the September guest for our monthly conversation about civil society. Transportation, higher education, and the way the legislature works were some of the topics touched on in the lively hour and a half.  For a brief summary, see http://www.tess.org/recent.html#030916.

  • Rosanna Bellotti, producer of the annual Safeco Classic Golf Tournament, and Carol Walter of Youth Eastside Services present the basics of Special Event (fundraiser) planning at the BrownBag on October 23 at Antioch University Seattle from noon to 1:30 pm.
  • Bobbi Stevens will discuss the human resources function at nonprofits at the BrownBag on November 20 (noon to 1:30, Antioch University)
